Many approach the powder room as a Jewel Box: a smallish space high on style. Here you'll find wallpapers or murals, crystal sconces, multi-tiered crown mouldings, and most likely, the most fancy (read: expensive) fixtures in the house.
Some of the really fancy powder rooms will actually have two rooms: the room with the toilet and sink, and a "waiting room" or "anteroom" - which is, of course, the perfect spot for your dinner guests to touch up their makeup or bond over Veuve Cliquot while they wait to use the facilities (Ah! The life!!)
Other custom homes will have two powder rooms adjacent to one another: the ladies' and the gent's. In this type of set-up, you'll likely see ultra-girly and glam decor in the ladies powder room (think brass, crystal, marble, and murals), and masculine design in the gentleman's powder room (think stainless steel, back-lit onyx, dark and dramatic decor, and of course, a urinal - sometimes with a wall-mounted television above!)
In many custom homes, you'll also see a walk-in closet or mudroom in the vicinity of the powder room - but it all depends if the house was designed for family living or for entertaining.
Whether you live in a 10,000 square foot home or an 800 square foot condo, the powder room can be a chance to show off the daring side of your design personality. Have fun with it!
